We indulged in a little culture as an introduction to today's art lesson. We learned that famous artist Picasso (or to give him his full title, Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Martyr Patricio Clito Ruíz y Picasso!) was born more than 100 years ago in Spain. His father was a teacher of art and he encouraged his son Pablo to draw and paint. However, by the time Pablo was 13, he was a better artist than his father!
During his life his style changed many times, but we were particularly interested in his portraits, as described below:
Meghna noticed that, 'The eyes are in the wrong place!'
Harrison added, 'The portraits have strange shapes.'
Virginia told us, 'They are not like normal portraits. The nose is not quite in the middle.'
Seyf commented, 'They have beautiful colours.'
Tatiana added, 'One of them had a square-like head and square-like eyes and it had a line down the middle.'
Tommy clarified, 'It is like the side of a face down the middle.'
Of course, without further ado, we set to work. First we used a pencil to sketch a shape for the face. After a 'feely' investigation of the shape of our own profile and a close look at the profile of a friend, we drew the side of a face down the middle. Next we added eyes, ears, a mouth and hair. Then we traced the outline using a black marker.
We then
set about
the task
of
colouring
them
using
beautiful
bright
colours
of
oil
pastels!
